How to set up your first board in ten minutes

The starter board, edit mode, a twelve-column grid and several boards for different parts of life. The short path from sign-up to a planned week.

A board in Sklop is a single screen with everything that matters to you this week. You don't need to build a database or pick a template out of a hundred look-alikes. Just open the starter board and shape it to fit you.

What you get right after sign-up

As soon as you sign in, you land on the "Start" board, set to a week. It has:

  • Days of the week. A strip with today highlighted. Click any day, and recurring tasks and the diary show that day.
  • Recurring tasks. A table for the week: a row per task, a cell per day.
  • Tasks. A list for the period, with a done mark right in the tile.
  • Goal progress. How many recurring tasks are done out of the closed days.
  • Diary. Five short questions about the day: what happened, what was good, what was hard, what you learned and what you want tomorrow.

That's enough to get started. Add your first recurring task and one task for today, and the board is already working.

Edit mode

The "Edit" button in the top right corner turns on board editing. In this mode:

  1. Drag a widget by any part, and it snaps into a free spot on the grid.
  2. Resize it by the tile's edge. The content doesn't just shrink: many widgets have layouts for different widths. The world clock shows cards on a narrow tile and turns into a 24-hour scale on a wide one.
  3. Add a new widget with the button in the toolbar. The picker shows right away which widgets have room on the grid: the other cards stay inactive until space frees up.
  4. Remove what you don't need with the cross on the tile.

The "Save" button applies the changes, and "Cancel" puts the board back the way it was.

Grid and width

The grid has twelve columns. By default the working area takes ten of them, with an empty column on each side. The "Full width" switch in edit mode gives the board all twelve. Rows are fine-grained, so you can set a tile's height precisely rather than in jumps.

Board period

Each board shows its own period: a day, a week or a month. The arrows in the toolbar flip through periods, and the "Today" button brings you back to the current one. The page address remembers the open period, so you can bookmark a link to last week.

Several boards

The board name in the toolbar is a switcher. Use "New board" to create another one: empty or from a template. The "Calendar" template gives you a month grid with tasks and recurring task marks.

It's handy to split different parts of life across boards: weekdays, health, a move, exam season. Or you can keep everything on one screen. Sklop doesn't decide for you which structure is right.

Where to start tomorrow

Don't try to fill everything in at once. Keep three or four widgets you use every day on the board, and add new ones when there's a reason. A board you want to come back to is usually simpler than it seems on the first evening.
